Christmas Intersessions
Father, as we gather on this joyful day to celebrate the birth of your Son,We remember that, after 2000 years, there are still those who find no room at the inn
Still many are seeking shelter, food, medicine, hope, compassion.
We commend them to your care. Father, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
It is 2000 years since your Son was born into a land subdued by foreigners,
And still there are those who live in the shadow of the guns,
Still children who play amongst rusting war engines or ruined homes.
Still young men are being sent across the world to kill or be killed.
We ask you to turn men’s energies to comforting and healing, not destroying.
Father, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
Almost from the hour of Jesus’ birth, Herod sought his death.
2000 years on, there are still men of power who despise and ill-use your children.
We ask you to teach all those in authority to use their power as a gift for all,
Not a prize for few, and a burden for many Father, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
2000 years have passed since the bright light of the star guided the Magi
To the stable, and still so many shun the light of your love, and stumble on,
In dark, self-inflicted despair. Open their eyes, Father,
And let them see the way that leads to Grace Father, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
2000 years ago, your angel proclaimed ‘Peace on Earth; goodwill to all men’.
Too many have yet to learn that it wasn’t mandatory. It was a proposal.
It requires acceptance to become effective, a gift to be taken up,
In the fellowship of your Son. When a man is cut down, a woman widowed by violence,
Or a child is abused, peace and goodwill are rejected- spurned.
Help men to accept and take up the gifts of your Spirit,
Gifts which Jesus promised us by his love and suffering
Father, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer.
